The Gokyo Lake Trek is a high-altitude Everest region trek built around the turquoise Gokyo Lakes, the vast Ngozumpa Glacier, and the culture of the Sherpa heartland, including Namche Bazaar. It is a classic teahouse adventure that balances big mountain scenery with quieter valley landscapes and a strong sense of wilderness.

The signature highlight is the climb to Gokyo Ri (5,483m), one of the best viewpoints in the Khumbu. You witness the panoramic Himalayan views of Everest, Cho Oyu, and Makalu, without going on the main Everest base camp trail.

You then climb Gokyo Ri (5,483m) for sweeping views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu, before descending via Dole and returning to Lukla.

Tour Plan

You arrive in Kathmandu and get a warm welcome at Tribhuvan International Airport. We transfer you to your hotel, where you can rest after your journey and get settled in. Later in the afternoon, you attend a pre-trip meeting with us.  You explore the city on your own and stay overnight in the hotel.

Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu

Meals: Not included

You take a scenic mountain flight to Lukla and begin the trek on a gentle trail that helps you ease into the Everest region. After sorting gear and meeting the full crew, you set off at a comfortable pace with fresh mountain air and classic Khumbu views.

The route drops gradually through Chaurikharka and follows the Dudh Koshi River, passing mani stones, prayer wheels, and the first suspension bridges. You reach Phakding by afternoon, check into your teahouse, and rest well for the climb toward Namche the next day.

  • Trek duration: 3 to 4 hours
  • Accommodation: Teahouse in Phakding
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Note: Flight is about 30 minutes from Kathmandu. In peak time (Mar–May, Sep–Nov), the flight often operates to Manthali (40 minutes) instead of Kathmandu.

You continue along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing more suspension bridges and walking through pine forests and small settlements like Benkar. The trail feels lively with teahouses, prayer flags, and mani stones marking the route.

You pass through Monjo and enter Sagarmatha National Park, then follow the river to Jorsalle before the climb begins. After crossing the Hillary Suspension Bridge, you take on the steep final ascent to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa trading hub with your first clear Himalayan views.

Trek duration: 5 to 6 hours

Accommodation: Guesthouse in Namche Bazaar

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Note: The last climb is steep, so pace steadily and hydrate well.

You spend the day acclimatizing in Namche Bazaar while staying active on a short hike above town. The most popular walk goes to Everest View Hotel, where the ridgeline opens to wide Himalayan panoramas and helps your body adjust to the altitude.

You can continue toward Khumjung and Khunde to experience traditional Sherpa villages, monasteries, and local life, then return to Namche for rest. The afternoon is ideal for a relaxed stroll through the bazaar, visiting bakeries, shops, and gear stores, and preparing for the higher days ahead.

  • Trek duration: 2 to 4 hours
  • Accommodation: Guesthouse in Namche Bazaar
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Note: Hike high and sleep low for better acclimatization.

You leave Namche Bazaar and climb steadily out of the valley through a beautiful rhododendron forest. As the elevation increases, the trail feels quieter and more alpine, with juniper and large conifers lining the path, especially scenic in spring.

You pass yak kharkas and seasonal settlements, with wide mountain views opening up along the way. The scenery stays dramatic throughout the day, with clear views of Khumbi La and Tawache before you reach Phortse Thanga for the night.

Trek duration: 5 to 6 hours

Accommodation: Guesthouse in Phortse Thanga

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Note: The day includes steady uphill sections, so keep a comfortable pace.

You climb a ridge above Phortse Thanga for excellent views down the valley to Kengtega and up toward Cho Oyu. The trail then drops to a river before climbing steeply again toward the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier, with the landscape turning more rugged as altitude increases.

You reach Machhermo by early noon, a small high-altitude settlement that feels calm and remote. The rest of the day stays relaxed for acclimatization, with time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery before heading higher tomorrow.

  • Trek duration: 5 to 6 hours
  • Accommodation: Guesthouse in Machhermo
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Note: Early arrival makes it a good day for rest and acclimatization.

You trek higher into the Gokyo Valley on a steady trail with widening mountain views and a more rugged alpine feel. As altitude increases, the landscape becomes starker, with rocky slopes, yak pastures, and glacier-fed streams shaping the route.

You reach Gokyo, one of the main destinations of the trek, and settle in for a two-night stay as a base for nearby hiking and sightseeing. The village sits beside the beautiful Gokyo Lakes and close to the Ngozumpa Glacier, creating a dramatic high-altitude setting for the days ahead.

Trek duration: 5 to 6 hours

Accommodation: Guesthouse in Gokyo

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Note: Gokyo is the base for 2 nights for hiking and sightseeing.

You start early for the climb to Gokyo Ri, the trek’s best viewpoint. The trail is steep and steady, and the higher you climb, the bigger the panorama becomes. From the top, you take in sweeping Himalayan views, including Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and the vast Ngozumpa Glacier below.

You descend back to Gokyo for a relaxed afternoon. The rest of the day is ideal for resting at altitude, strolling along the Gokyo Lakes, and preparing for the return journey down the valley.

  • Trek duration: 5 to 6 hours
  • Accommodation: Guesthouse in Gokyo
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Note: Start before sunrise and carry a headlamp and warm layers.

You begin the descent from Gokyo, retracing the trail down the valley as the air grows richer and the landscape slowly turns greener. The route feels more relaxed after the Gokyo Ri day, with steady downhill sections that help you recover while still keeping a comfortable trekking rhythm.

You pass through familiar high-valley scenery, with forested stretches and changing viewpoints as the Himalayan backdrops fade into the distance. By afternoon, you reach Dole, settle into a guesthouse, and enjoy a restful evening before continuing the return journey.

Trek duration: 6 to 7 hours

Accommodation: Guesthouse in Dole

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Note: A steady descent day, but altitude is still high, so hydrate and pace well.

You continue the descent from Dole, leaving the higher alpine zone behind as the trail drops through quieter ridgelines and forested sections. The air feels easier today, and the walk becomes more comfortable as the landscape turns greener and more settled.

You pass through the traditional Sherpa settlement of Khumjung village, then continue down toward Namche Bazaar. Returning to Namche feels like a reset, with more facilities, warm meals, and time to relax after the high-altitude days in the Gokyo valley.

  • Trek duration: 5 to 6 hours
  • Accommodation: Guesthouse in Namche Bazaar
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Note: It is mostly downhill, so trekking poles help reduce knee strain.

You leave Namche Bazaar and descend on familiar trails back into the Dudh Koshi valley. The route crosses suspension bridges, passes mani stones and small villages, and moves through pine forests with a mix of steady downhill walking and a few short climbs.

You continue past Phakding and follow the river trail toward Lukla, where the trek began. After arriving, you settle into a guesthouse, enjoy your final evening in the Everest region, and celebrate the completion of the Gokyo Lakes adventure.

Trek duration: 6 to 7 hours

Accommodation: Guesthouse in Lukla

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Note: Pack flight essentials separately for an early start tomorrow.

You take an early flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, enjoying final aerial views of the Khumbu valleys and Himalayan ridgelines. After landing, we transfer you to your hotel where you get time to rest, freshen up, and enjoy Kathmandu at your own pace. In the evening, you join a farewell dinner to celebrate the trek’s completion.

  • Trek duration: Flight 35 min (Kathmandu) or 20 min (Manthali) + 5 to 6 hrs drive if via Manthali
  • Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Kathmandu
