The Langtang Valley Trek is a scenic 10-day journey in the Rasuwa District of Nepal, inside Langtang National Park. Often known as the “Valley of Glaciers,” Langtang is ideal for travelers who want to experience the Himalayas without taking a domestic flight or joining the harder trails of Everest and Annapurna.

The journey begins with a road trip to Syabrubesi, about 122 km (75 mi) from Kathmandu. From Syabrubesi, the route follows the Langtang Khola through forests, riverside paths, waterfalls, and traditional mountain villages. As you move deeper into the valley, the green hills gradually open into alpine landscapes surrounded by snow-covered peaks.

Along the way, you pass through Tamang villages and get a closer look at Tibetan Buddhist culture. You will also see prayer flags, mani walls, chortens, and monasteries appear throughout the route, adding a strong cultural touch to the journey.

The trek then reaches Kyanjin Gompa, a beautiful mountain village known for its monastery, yak cheese, and close views of the surrounding peaks. From this very village, you can embark on the trek’s biggest highlight, an optional hike up to Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri. These viewpoints reward you with sweeping panoramas of Langtang Lirung, surrounding glaciers, and the Tibetan ranges, making it the most memorable part of the journey.

With its easy access, moderate trail, rich culture, and dramatic mountain scenery, this trek is one of the best short Himalayan journeys near Kathmandu.

Tour Plan

You arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Our team picks you up and takes you to your hotel. After check-in, you can rest from your international flight and take a short walk around the city and enjoy your welcome dinner as per your package.

Later, you will get a short trek briefing where the guide explains the Langtang Valley Trek route, daily walking hours, permits, transport, accommodation, meals, and packing details. You can also use the evening to check your trekking gear or buy any missing items in Thamel, Kathmandu.

 • Trip duration: 25 to 30 minutes taxi ride from the airport to your hotel

Note: Do not miss the trip briefing and gear check.

After breakfast, you leave Kathmandu and drive north toward Syabrubesi, the starting point of the Langtang Valley Trek. The road passes through hillside settlements, terraced fields, river valleys, and rural landscapes before entering the Langtang region.

The drive follows a winding mountain road, so the journey feels long, but it gives you your first view of Nepal's hilly countryside beyond Kathmandu. After reaching Syabrubesi, you check into a local lodge and prepare for the first walking day of the trek.

 • Drive duration: 6 to 7 hours

 • Driving distance: 122 km / 75.8 miles

 • Maximum altitude: 1,550m / 5,085ft

 • Elevation gain: +65m / +213ft

Note: The road to Syabrubesi is bumpy in places and will be a rough ride. Also, keep water, snacks, and light essentials in your day bag.

Your trek begins from Syabrubesi as you follow the Langtang River and walk through forested trails, small settlements, and riverside paths. The trail includes suspension bridges, gradual climbs, and sections through bamboo and rhododendron forests.

As you move higher, the valley becomes quieter and greener, with the sound of the river following much of the route. You continue uphill through shaded forest trails before reaching Lama Hotel, a peaceful stop surrounded by hills and woodland.

 • Trek duration: 6 to 7 hours

 • Trek distance: 11 km / 6.8 miles

 • Maximum altitude: 2,480m / 8,136ft

 • Elevation gain: +1,020m / +3,346ft

Note: This is the first trekking day, so walk at a steady pace and avoid rushing on the uphill sections.

You leave Lama Hotel and continue deeper into the Langtang Valley. On this day, you gain almost 1,000 meters / 3,281 feet, from Lama Hotel at 2,480m / 8,136ft to Langtang Village at 3,430m / 11,253ft, so walk slowly and pay attention to signs of altitude sickness. If you are lucky, you may also spot wildlife, including the rare red panda, along the forested sections.

On the way, you pass Ghoda Tabela before reaching Langtang Village, a major settlement in the region. Unfortunately, the original Langtang village was destroyed by the 2015 earthquake and Langtang Lirung avalanche, but a village has been rebuilt nearby and now welcomes trekkers again.

 • Trek duration: 7 to 8 hours

 • Trek distance: 14 km / 8.7 miles

 • Maximum altitude: 3,430m / 11,253ft

 • Elevation gain: +950m / +3,117ft

Note: Watch for altitude sickness symptoms as you gain elevation.

On this day, you walk through open valley landscapes, yak pastures, stone-built houses, mani walls, prayer wheels, and small local settlements as the trail gently climbs toward Kyanjin Gompa. This is a shorter trekking day, but the route is very scenic.

Kyanjin Gompa is the last main teahouse settlement on this route and is the most beautiful place in the Langtang Valley. After arrival, you can rest, visit the local monastery, explore the village, or visit the yak cheese factory if time allows.

 • Trek duration: 3 to 4 hours

 • Trek distance: 9.5 km / 5.9 miles

 • Maximum altitude: 3,870m / 12,697ft

 • Elevation gain: +440m / +1,444ft

Note: Since the walking day is shorter, use the extra time to rest and adjust before the viewpoint hike.

On day 06, you reach the highest point of the Langtang Valley Trek. While spending a day at Kyanjin Gompa, you can either choose the more demanding hike to Tserko Ri Viewpoint (4,984m) or take a shorter hike to Kyanjin Ri (4,773m).

Both viewpoints offer 360-degree mountain views. Kyanjin Ri is the shorter option, while Tserko Ri is higher, steeper, and more challenging, with broader Himalayan views on a clear day. From the viewpoints, you can see Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Yala Peak, Mt. Shishapangma (8,027m), and nearby Tibetan ranges before returning to Kyanjin Gompa for the night.

 • Trek duration: 5 to 6 hours

 • Trek distance: 7.5 km / 4.6 miles

 • Maximum altitude: Tserko Ri, 4,984m / 16,352ft

 • Elevation gain/loss: +1,114m / +3,655ft, then -1,114m / -3,655ft

Note: Start early, wear warm layers with a solid windproof jacket and carry water, snacks and sunglasses for the viewpoint hike.

You leave Kyanjin Gompa after breakfast and begin the return journey to the Lama Hotel for the overnight stay. The trail passes back through Langtang Village, open valley sections, riverside paths, and forested lower areas. It gives you another chance to enjoy the scenery, local settlements, and possible wildlife sightings, including the rare red panda on a lucky day.

Since you are walking to a lower altitude, the route feels easier than the climb. However, it is still a long trekking day, so keep a steady pace and take short breaks to avoid leg cramps.

 • Trek duration: 7 to 8 hours

 • Trek distance: 21-23 km / 13-15 miles

 • Maximum altitude: 3,870m / 12,697ft

 • Elevation loss: -1,420m / -4,659ft

Note: Use trekking poles for better support, as the long descent usually puts pressure on your knees.

This is the last trekking day. You follow the forest and riverside trail back toward Syabrubesi. You walk down through familiar sections of the route, crossing bridges and passing small teahouse settlements along the way.

The lower valley feels warmer as you return. After reaching Syabrubesi, you can rest at the lodge and spend your last evening in the Langtang region.

 • Trek duration: 5 to 6 hours

 • Trek distance: 11 km / 6.8 miles

 • Maximum altitude: 2,480m / 8,136ft

 • Elevation loss: -1,020m / -3,346ft

After breakfast, you drive back from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu by private jeep. The journey is about 122 kilometers or 75 miles long and follows the same mountain route through scenic villages, rivers, valleys, and hillside roads.

Once you arrive in Kathmandu, our team will take you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for rest, shopping, or enjoying a relaxed time in the capital city. In the evening, you join a farewell dinner from the Joyful Eco Treks team to celebrate the successful completion of your Langtang Valley trek.

 • Drive duration: 7 to 8 hours

 • Driving distance: 122 km / 75.8 miles

 • Maximum altitude: 1,460m / 4,790ft

 • Elevation loss: -65m / -213ft

Note: Keep your travel documents and valuables in your day bag during the drive.

Our team will take you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your flight home, with warm memories of the Langtang Himalayas.

 • Trip duration: 25 to 30 minutes ride from the hotel to the airport

Note: Reach the airport at least 3 hours before your international flight.

Note: These temperatures are for the main trekking seasons, spring from March to May and autumn from September to November. Weather can change quickly near Langtang Village, Kyanjin Gompa, Kyanjin Ri, and Tserko Ri.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for the Langtang Valley Trek. Spring, from March to May, brings mild weather, blooming rhododendrons, and clear views around Langtang Village and Kyanjin Gompa. Autumn, from September to November, usually has stable conditions, dry trails, and excellent mountain visibility.

Winter is also possible for prepared trekkers, but it gets very cold near Kyanjin Gompa, Kyanjin Ri, and Tserko Ri. Monsoon is less ideal because rain makes forest paths muddy and the road to Syabrubesi harder to drive.

Accommodation on the Langtang Valley Trek is in local teahouses and guesthouses along the route. Most rooms are simple, with twin beds, blankets, and shared toilets. Facilities are comfortable in lower villages but become more basic as you move toward Langtang Village and Kyanjin Gompa.

Meals are served where you stay and commonly include dal bhat, noodles, fried rice, soup, potatoes, eggs, Tibetan bread, tea, coffee, and seasonal dishes. These menu choices are usually enough for a short trek, but carrying snacks is helpful for the Kyanjin Ri or the Tserko Ri hike.

The Langtang Valley Trek is moderate and suitable for beginners with good fitness. It does not require climbing skills, but you should be ready for steady uphill walks, forest paths, rocky sections, and 5 to 8 hours of walking on some days.

The main challenges are the quick altitude gain from Syabrubesi to Kyanjin Gompa and the high viewpoint hike to Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri. A slow pace, enough water, warm layers, and proper rest help make the journey safer and more comfortable.

The Langtang Valley Trek takes you from warm lower valleys to cold high-altitude viewpoints, so packing the right gear matters. Pack light, but carry the essentials for changing weather, long walking days, and teahouse stays.

A well-planned packing list keeps you comfortable on the trail without making your bag too heavy. Here’s the checklist to help you carry the right gear for the Langtang Valley Trek.
