How it works

Sorted in three steps

1

2

The exact permits required, with an indicative cost for your whole group.

3

Check your cover

Tick what your insurance covers — we flag any gaps that matter on the trail.

Why it matters

Two things you can't skip

Wrong permits mean checkpoint fines and delays. The wrong insurance can mean a five-figure rescue bill — or no rescue at all.

The right permits

National park, conservation and restricted-area permits are checked at trail gates and army posts. Carry the correct ones or you don't go.

Insurance that covers altitude

Most standard policies cap hiking low and exclude helicopter rescue. For Nepal you need cover to your trek's altitude, plus evacuation and mountain medical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need special trekking insurance?

Yes. Standard travel policies often cap hiking at 2,500–4,000 m and exclude helicopter rescue. Nepal treks go higher and remote, so you need a policy that explicitly covers your trek's maximum altitude, emergency helicopter evacuation and mountain medical care.

Which permits will I need?

It depends on the region. Most treks need a national park or conservation area permit plus a TIMS card; restricted areas like Manaslu, Upper Mustang and Makalu need a special Restricted Area Permit arranged through a registered agency.

How much can a helicopter rescue cost?

A mountain helicopter rescue can run USD 5,000–15,000 or more, which is exactly why "emergency helicopter evacuation" must appear in your policy.

Are the permit costs here exact?

They're official reference rates and a solid planning estimate. Government fees and exchange rates change, so reconfirm with your agency before you travel.
